Story

Covers four turbulent decades during the Troubles in Northern Ireland

The real-life Dolours Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Rea. During that time, Rea appeared in the film for which she is probably best known in the US: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game. In that film, Rea plays Fergus, a very reluctant and ambivalent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the same organization with which Price has been associated for years. (2024 UK release; 9 episodes, 41-50 minutes each) opens, it is “Belfast 1972”; and we are reminded that this is “based on a true story”.

We do not know why or who took her

A woman is taken from her home after her child. Then we go to “Dublin, Ireland, 29 years later”; and we meet. Dolours Price. She is soon interviewed as part of an oral history of the Troubles.

We’re currently 10 minutes into episode 1

A few comments: There have been many films, TV series and documentaries about the Troubles before, but I can’t remember ever seeing anything quite like Don’t Tell. 3 decades of being in the Troubles gives a new perspective. The series follows a number of events and jumps back and forth in time, but somehow puts the underlying themes of the Troubles in clearer perspective than ever before. While the differences and struggles between the Protestant/British military and the Catholic/Irish views get a lot of attention, there are also less obvious things involved, such as the disintegration of the IRA.

There are many solid performances from Lola Petticrew as Dolours

Beware: This miniseries is not for the faint of heart. By the end of it all, I felt like I had been mentally punched in the gut. This miniseries is captivating from start to finish, although some moments are awkward. (Also, within minutes of watching the first episode, I realized I needed English subtitles because I was missing about half of what I was hearing (Northern Irish accents and all…) Don’t Say Anything started streaming on Hulu.

I watched 3 episodes of it last night and was just hooked

I read a positive review of it in the New York Times a week ago, and then I found out that it currently has a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason. If you’re in the mood for some high-octane drama or are just curious about the subject matter, we recommend checking it out and drawing your own conclusions.
