Story

A Montana ranching family deals with others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his mountain drawl and reverts to his normal SoCal speaking voice.

Kevin Costner is the patriarch who presides over a dynastic ranch the size of a village

His lifestyle is influenced by resort developers, tribal rights and the authority of the state of Montana. He reminds me of Rock Hudson from “Giant,” trying to stay true to the old ways. “Yellowstone” unfolds quickly with few introductions, but its story unfolds at the natural pace of a day in the wilderness, pausing for tribal rituals, cowboy conventions and political machinations.

The land and family are his blood

It’s a far-reaching undertaking that lingers on the lines between law and justice, family and friends. Costner fills the character’s boots naturally, it seems. He is a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often.

a slice of life in another world

He can hear the footsteps approaching, but he can only play his role out of habit and loyalty. Although some actions are a bit confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is getting an authentic image. I hope the conclusion of this saga includes an emotional payoff that justifies its scope and attention to detail.

I raise my rating to “9”

Update 07/20/18: After four episodes, this series has a strong voice and a persistent pace. We learn the fullness of each story, from the roots to the fruit.
