Story

So apparently I read the book ages ago (it was like a ritual of coming of age in a certain time and place) and to be honest, I remember little except the odd name (because some of Jilly’s work was soooo de rigeur — Rupert Campbell Black speaks for itself – and to some extent entered the lexicon), but almost immediately I began, if I do not remember the whole plot, to get a synaptic click with the intoxicating aroma of YSL Opium from watching Rivals. These are silly laughs, not loud laughs, and impudent, not lascivious.

He quickly built a world – the 80s, greedy old women and Thatcher yuppies, homesick wives and formidable warrior women, everyone is treated like meat no matter what they do, harmony, cigars and birdsong, English class strata, Britain in a globalizing mire asking to hammer the nails at the top… Maybe because I’m older and I meet a lot of people, Cooper’s criticism of British culture is more obvious, but I think it’s also about the casting, the accents, the costumes – identifying the appearance of each character (to quote Bordeaux) and presenting it to the audience.
